THE British Library has begun harvesting digital content. An exciting new initiative, it will guarantee research access to diverse forms of digital content for the ages to come.
The announcement comes after years of planning and a significant financial investment by the library. Recent revisions to UK copyright law have cleared the way for the storage of electronic publications on the web.
Billions of websites, e-journals, Facebook profiles, tweets, blogs and e-books will be preserved.
The process will begin with the harvesting of an initial 4.8 million websites from the UK domain. There has been concern about the amount of digital material already lost in the early part of the 21st century.
Access to the material will be available via onsite reading rooms at each legal deposit library.
